New addition to ANU Press' Biography Series
Tuesday 20 May 2025

The latest addition to the NCB's 'Biography Series' with ANU Press has just been published: ‘I buy this piece of ground here’: An Italian market-gardener community in Adelaide, 1920s–1970s, by Madeleine Regan.

In this group biography, Regan explores a cohort of Italian families from the Veneto region who migrated during the 1920s and became market gardeners in suburban Adelaide. Using oral histories and archival records, the book examines migration and migrant communities before the oft-studied postwar migration boom.

Available via ANU Press to purchase in hard copy as well as open-access online here.

Praise for 'I buy this piece of ground here':

‘A formidably detailed piece of research and the product of a most fruitful community collaboration.’—Frank Bongiorno AM, Professor of History, ANU
